Discusses about undertaking joint research project on human rights and climate policies

Dr. Farid Lamara, renowned environmental expert of French Development Agency (Agence Francaise de Developpement, AFD) called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam today September 29, 2026 at the latter’s office of the university. He was accompanied by Mr. Neumann Max, Project Manager of the same agency. 

Dean of the Faculty of Law of DU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ekramul Haque and Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof. Dr. Md. Humayun Kabir was present on this occasion. 

During the meeting they discussed the possibilities of undertaking a research project titled ‘Human Rights and Climate Policies in Bangladesh’ in cooperation with French Development Agency (AFD). Dhaka University will play role as implementing authority of this project. They also discussed about making a framework for data collection of this project which can support systematic monitoring of how climate change is impacting the human rights. It can be applied by various actors including in government, civil society and academia, they opined. Formulation of research committee and scientific committee with DU experts to conduct this research project were also discussed in the meeting. They also discussed the possibilities of undertaking more joint collaborative academic and research programs on nature, climate change and river pollution between Dhaka University and French Development Agency (AFD) engaging the communities of costal areas of Bangladesh.  
 
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A. B. M. Obaidul Islam thanked the French expert for undertaking this project. He expressed his willingness to work with AFD to promote academic and research activities at DU. He stressed the need for signing a tripartite MoU among Dhaka University, French Development Agency and Government of Bangladesh for conducting researches and implementing the research outcome effectively. The VC also emphasized on undertaking effective measures for making country’s rivers free from chemical pollution through researches.
