In 1948 Faculty of Fine Arts (former Institute of Fine Arts) established with only three departments under the leadership of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. Then 1955 Oriental art department established with some optimistic motivation. The objective of Oriental art department is to practice the glorious and rich traditional Art of Asia to save the continuity of our own art trend. Following the objective and ideal of Bengal School, which originated in opposition to western academic realism, the students of Oriental Art department have been Practicing art with great success since 1955. The Students of this department synthesize modern western art with traditional art trend. So, a innovative ground has created in this department where modern western and Oriental art blend together. This blending enriches our art Practice through nourishing Bangladeshi traditional Art.
Former principal Shafiqul Ameen, professor Rashid Chowdhury, professor Aminul Islam and professor Md. Abul Hashem Khan had been teachers of this department from the very beginning. Professor Dr. Md. Abdus Satter, Associate professor Shawkatuzzaman who died of incurable disease, Professor Nasreen Begum was also an efficient teacher of this department.
Professor Dr. Malay Bala, Dr. Mizanur Rahman Fakir, Dr. Sushanta Kumar Adhikary, Associate Professor Md. Abdul Aziz, Assistant Professor Kantideb Adhikary, Gopal Chandra Trivedi, Dipti Rani Datta, Sumon Kumar Baidya and Amit Nandi are the teachers of this department at present. Their teaching ability, creativity, participation in various workshops and exhibitions both at home and abroad and receiving awards have increased reputation and honour of this department. This department is determined to spread the news of these achievements and the trend of traditional art all over the world.
